Join us on July 5, 2025, for the 1st annual Gros Morne Fishing Derby, a family-friendly event that marks the opening of Newfoundland’s recreational cod fishing season. Held at the Water’s Edge Campground & Marina right on Bonne Bay in Gros Morne National Park, this event welcomes anglers of all ages and skill levels. With an entry fee of just $20 per person (kids under 16 free), the derby is designed to foster community spirit, promote sustainable fishing practices, and offer a day packed with exciting competitions and fun family friendly activities

Registration & Event Schedule
Registration is from 6:00AM to 10:00AM at the Water’s Edge Campground, where anglers can take advantage of the on site boat launch, marina and parking facilities. Participants may fish from any watercraft, boats, kayaks, or canoes, shore fishing is not permitted. The fishing period runs until 3:30 PM, giving you ample time to explore the local waters and compete for various prize categories. Key activities include a morning start, a mid-afternoon weigh-in from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM, and an exhilarating evening fish fry and awards ceremony from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Meeting Time & Location:
6:00AM to 10:00 AM at Water’s Edge Gros Morne (https://watersedgegrosmorne.com/) in Shoal Brook near Woody Point and launch directly from their marina. The Lightkeeper’s Cafe is located right onsite and will have hot coffee, tea, breakfast items and fishing gear like rods, reels, line, tackle etc available before you hit the water.
Fishing Competition & Guidelines
Rules:
Throughout the day, anglers compete for prizes including the biggest fish (any species), the biggest cod, the largest mackerel, the most unique species, and the best junior angler (under 16). All fish that cannot be kept must be measured on board—captured in a time-stamped photo showing species and measurment for authenticity verification—before being released. For those without their own watercraft, fishing charters and fishing kayak rentals are available. The event encourages responsible, fair fishing and is designed to be both competitive and family-friendly.
Evening Fish Fry & Awards Ceremony
After weigh in is complete the evening fish fry and awards ceremony runs from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with live music and a community dinner featuring fresh-caught fish donated by derby participants, crispy golden fries, homemade coleslaw, and refreshing drinks. Kids under 12 receive a free mackerel jig and sticker, adding to the family-friendly vibe. The event culminates in an awards ceremony where the top catches and anglers are honoured, rounding off a day of fun, competition, and community celebration. Biggest Fish (Any Species)

Most Unique Species
This category is all about creativity and rarity. The award is given to the angler who catches the most unusual or unexpected fish. It celebrates diversity in the catch and recognizes those who venture beyond the ordinary.
Best Junior Angler (Under 16)
Encouraging the next generation of anglers, this prize is awarded to the most impressive young angler under 16. It highlights skill, enthusiasm, and potential, inspiring youngsters to embrace Newfoundland’s fishing traditions.
